To date (10/25/2000), we have received over $6000 in generous donations to the Wellington Park Fund.

Park Fund

The Wellington Park Fund is currently at $6105! The city is has made the arrangements through their legal department to transfer their original allocation of $12,500 to our fund account at our non-profit sponsor, NCSC.  The play structure and swings that we have ordered came to a total of $14,452.

The balance is being used to cover additional expenses such as wear mats, concrete, gravel, timbers, rebar, equipment rental, etc. for the build.  In addition, we would like to replace the current benches with newer ones (roughly $600 each) made from recycled plastic. If you have pledged a donation, please send it in shortly. We really could use some additional donations. Please let your neighbors know about the playground, the build, and our upcoming Parkfest. Also please mention it to any local businesses that you know.

We plan to acknowledge all donors to the Wellington Park Fund in some permanent manner at the new playground area.  This may take the form of a photoengraved plaque on one of our new benches.

Your contributions are tax deductible thanks to our sponsorship by the Newton Community Service Centers, (www.ncscinc.com). If you wish to make a donation to the Wellington Park Fund, please make out your check to NCSC, Inc. and write "Wellington Park Fund" on the check and send it to:

Our fundraising campaign received a very early boost from a $1000 contribution from Garden City Alarm Company.  And just before our playground opening, Fleet Bank provided a grant of $1000 to the Wellington Park Fund.  Special thanks to Contracting Specialists Incorporated (www.contractingspecialists.com) of Attleboro for their donation to cover the cost of concrete for our build.  We also really appreciate the very generous donation of four sugar maple trees to the park by Phil Mastroianni Corp.   We are grateful for these and all other contributions, whether in donations or volunteer effort!

If anyone is considering selling a house or knows someone who is selling a house in the near future, please learn about the Alliance Charitable Fund (www.alliancefund.org). In this program, a significant portion of the broker's fee could go directly into the Wellington Park Fund. Susanne McInerney (South Gate Park) is a local broker participating in this program. Please contact her for more information at 617-558-2777, sue@SusanneMcInerney.com, or www.SusanneMcInerney.com.

Our fundraising campaign was begun in February, 2000.  We distributed two forms of our letter, one for local businesses and one for neighbors. We have added a map to the letter to make sure that businesses in particular know the location of Wellington Park.  If you know any businesses that might be interested in helping us, please contact Eleanor Ambrosio (964-1353).

Eleanor and Don Ambrosio have been responsible for printing up our letters. Jane Quinn was our coordinator for local neighborhood distribution.  Thanks to our former fundraising chairperson, Nancy Davis and her husband Tom Davis, for putting the letters together for us. Nancy also contacted local businesses by mail.  Nancy and Tom have moved recently (such is Army life) and we thank her for her enthusiasm for Wellington Park.

Alliance Charitable Fund

One of our committee members, Susanne McInerney, is also a RE-MAX Realtor and is involved with a very interesting program called the Alliance Charitable Fund (www.alliancefund.org). This fund support homeless causes among others. If you or any of your friends buys or sells a house through Susanne, a portion of the commission (about 25% goes to the Alliance Charitable Fund). Of this 25%, half can go the charitable cause of your choice - for instance, the Wellington Park Fund! Especially, with the price of houses in Newton, this program could raise a substantial amount for our fund. So if you know any potential house buyers or sellers, please have them give Susanne a call at 617-558-2777, email at sue@SusanneMcInerney.com, or visit her website at www.SusanneMcInerney.com for more information. By the way, her website has a wealth of useful information and calculators, including information on all recent Newton real estate transactions. You are also invited to take a look at the website of the Alliance Charitable Fund (www.alliancefund.org) for more details on this exciting charitable program.

Fundraising Ideas

Susanne McInerneylso had a very interesting suggestion for a Wellington Park Fund raiser. She could possible arrange for a future visit of the RE-MAX hot air balloon to Wellington Park. Tethered rides for a donation to the park would be offered. Four people can take a ride in the balloon at a time. We will have to look into what permits would be required from the city to do this. We would also need a not too windy day, lest a few Wellington Park folks end up at some other park!

There were also suggestions for having a big Wellington Park yard sale. Everyone has lots of old things they no longer want or need. We could have a big event at the park to help raise additional funds for the park.
