Fourth Annual Wellington Parkfest - Sunday, September 29, 1-4 PM

Just a reminder that our 4th Annual Parkfest is happening on Sunday from 1 to 4 pm. So please drop by. It is a great chance to get to know your neighbors a little better. We'll have soda in the coolers, ice cream in the bowls, and hot dogs (all beef and some veggie ones) on the grill. There will be kids's games again with small prizes. All are welcome even if you don't live nearby. Our local aldermen are usually present - a good chance to meet them. Mayor Cohen has often been known to drop by as well - thanks are definitely due him for submitting the court reconstruction in the city budget this year. The weather is supposed to be nice and sunny and the Patriots don't play until 4:30 in San Diego so there's no excuse to not come out and have some fun at the park.

Register and Win a Door Prize

When you arrive, check in at the Kilburn Road gate and please fill out one of our index cards at the entrance with your name, address, and especially email. Pick up a name tag and put your name and street on it. Hopefully you can connect with some other neighbors on your street that you have not met before. We will have some clipboards handy if you would like to perhaps join one of our park committees (gardening, court committee, canine issues, etc.) Look for neighborhood newcomer, Katie Callahan (Southgate Park), who has volunteered to handle the registration table.

Registrants will be entered in our door prize drawing, which will take place at 3:45 pm. You need not be present to win. Special thanks go to the newest eatery in West Newton, Paddy-O's on Elm Street for supplying a pair of $25 gift certificates (good at either Paddy'O's or their sister restaurant, O'Hara's, in Newton Highlands. Paddy'O's is at the site of the former Troubador. Some of you runners may remember the local road race, The Troubadour Trot which benefited Newton's Special Needs program. Paddy-O's has generously agreed to sponsor its successor race, the Shileleigh Shuffle (spelling??) to be announced soon. So far we also have some certificates from the neatest little coffee shop in West Newton, Ben's, on the corner of Washington and Waltham. If anyone else has a connection to a local business, we would welcome any other small prize donations (e.g. a free pizza).

Food and Refreshments

You are welcome to bring a dessert or something to share (try to avoid things with cream filling or anything that could spoil by longer exposure). Chips or fruit are apropos as well. Please supply a container (put your name on it if it needs to be returned). No need to bring something - only if you wish.

We will be serving all beef hot dogs and some veggie ones as well starting around 2 pm under the masterful grill skills of Bob Mobilia. Ice Cream will be served around 3 pm. Any special flavor requests? Cookie dough has been a popular choice in the past. We should have a variety of sodas on hand. Any volunteers out there belong to Costco or some place that we can get these items at less cost? Otherwise we will just pick them up locally.

Seating

You are encouraged to bring your own chairs and blankets. So far we still have limited seating at the park (Wait til next year when we have 4 additional benches!) If you happen to have a card table, it would be great if you brought it. Coolers with ice would be a great thing to bring (let us know). If you bring anything like tables, it would be a good idea to label them, so they can be returned to you later if necessary.

Activities

Look for a community basketball, soccer, or volleyball game. If you like sports, bring your sneakers and be prepared to play. Wiffleball has become one of the most popular sports at the park. We may even have a few adult challenges as well such as "kong" toss, giant Frisbee throwing, foul shooting, or putting contest. We would love to have any volunteers to help organize any sports activities. By the way it's certainly okay to just sit around, relax and chat!

We plan to have kid's games going. If you have any special skills like face painting, balloon animals, magic, please don't be afraid to show your talents. Just bring your supplies with you. How about some chalk art on the tennis court? Adam, a newcomer on Lindbergh Avenue, has offered to bring over his bike stand and tools. So if your bike needs a little adjustment, bring it on down. What other talents are out there?

Publicity

Flyers have been posted on many of the telephone poles in the vicinity of the park. This year they contain a map since many people do not know where Wellington Park is or, if they do, what its name is. You could help a lot after the event by taking down any of the flyers that you see on poles on your way home or on the days after the event. We will make a sweep of the neighborhood afterwards but the less to take down the better.

The Newton Tab printed a notice about our Parkfest in this week's edition so hopefully enough people will be aware of it. Thanks to Yulia Rashkovsky of Henshaw Street for making the larger Parkfest signs around the park entrances. Thanks also to Julia Chiva of Talbot Street for volunteering also with putting up signs. The most important publicity source is YOU. Please tell your friends and neighbors about the Parkfest, especially those who are new to the neighborhood. We just did not have the organization this year to make up small flyers for everyone's mailbox this year. We certainly welcome volunteers for next year however!

New Path Plans

At the Parkfest, we will have the plans for the new pathway around the play area for viewing. It will basically encompass the play area and provide a connection to the courts. An important note on the path project: it has been decided to postpone its completion until after the courts are redone early next summer. Mike Trotta of Public Works was ready to move on building our path but felt that it would be better to do it after the courts to allow more maneuverability for the heavy equipment and to avoid damage to the new path and benches from the heavy equipment.

Accessible pathways are the law under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) regulations. Many other parks around the city are being upgraded to the resulations as well under CDBG grants for handicapped accessibility. We may have a demonstration wheelchair at the Parkfest for people to try navigating the park without a path to see what a difference it will make.

View Logo Design

In addition, Linda Angelucci had a graphics designer friend come up with a first cut at some possible designs for a Wellington Park logo and sign. These will be available for viewing and comments. If you have any suggestions for our Wellington Park logo this will be an opportunity to let them be known. Some elements of the proposed designs were used in the Parkfest flyers.

Donations

The Parkfest is totally free. However if you would like to make a tax deductible contribution to help support the Parkfest or improvements at the park, it is quite easy to do. Just send a check to the Wellingtion Park Fund, c/o NCSC, 492 Waltham Street, West Newton, MA 02465.

Two years ago we dedicated our new play area. Next year we are planning to have a grand opening of new courts and pathway. It's amazing to see the changes in our little park. The most important thing is just to come out on Sunday and meet your neighbors. So come on down - you're all invited!

Neighborhood Notes

One of our park community lost his keys at Wellington Park the weekend of September 7-8. He believes that he left them near the timbers that border the garden area parallel to Kilburn Road. If anyone saw them, possibly found them, or knows someone who might have found them, please let us know (wellingtonpark@aol.com). Thanks!!!

Buttons & Bows Playgroup - Located on Henshaw Place, Fall openings for children 18 months and up, open Mon.-Fri. 8:45 AM to 12:45 PM, warm, comfortable atmosphere, snack and lunch included, have pre-school teaching certificate, Lic # 186283. Please call Diane at (617) 332-4422.

Free - pair of very cute Bunnies and cages - Please contact Norm or Joanne Westlund, 53 Henshaw Street, 617-332-4250.

If any of bikers happened to see the Tour de France, it is interesting to note that local Mike Myers (Henshaw Street) painted winner Lance Armstrong's helmet. Mike has an unusual business (Myers Mask Design in Worcester) designing and painting hockey goalie masks for college and pro teams. He came through in a pinch for Lance just before the Tour.

Communication

The Wellington Park News email edition is the fastest and easiest way for to keep in touch with you. Others may be reading it on the park entrance clipboards. If you wish to subscribe, just send an email to info@wellingtonpark.org or call (617) 969-6222 and leave a message. Or if you wish to be removed from the list, let us know the same way. Email addresses change often, so, if you used to get this newsletter and now don't (since you may be reading it on a clipboard), send us your new email address.

If you send email to us, please try to put in the "Subject" something relevant about your email (e.g. "want to subscribe, help with the parkfest"). Due to being posted on the web, our address gets a substantial amount of junk span email most of which is deleted before reading. Normally we do not send out mail with attachments (a common source of viruses). If we do on rare occasions send an attachment (e.g. a park diagram), we will alert you as to its detailed content in the body of the email.

And of course, check out our web site www.wellingtonpark.org. Back issues of Wellington News are available online. Hope to see you at the park soon!
