Welcome

School is back in session. Fall is right around the corner. The weather is still quite nice. And its time for the annual Wellington Parkfest this coming Sunday! After that, we put some energy into getting a CPA proposal together for some Wellington Park improvements.

6th Annual Wellington Parkfest - Sunday, September 19 from 1 to 4 pm

The Wellington Parkfest will be held this Sunday, September 19 from 1 to 4 pm. This is our 6th Annual event celebrating community around Wellington Park in West Newton. It promises to be bigger and better than ever thanks to the energizing influence of a host of new volunteers organized by chairperson Michelle Roover of Byrd Avenue. We had a great planning meeting held in late August with a lot of fresh ideas.

The Parkfest is a great opportunity for neighbors in the Wellington Park area to get to know each other. All are welcome to this free event which is part of the Neighborly Newton program of Newton Pride and is organized by Citizens for Wellington Park (www.wellingtonpark.org).

So far the weather is looking good for Sunday afternoon with the hurricane remnants clearing out on Saturday and a nice high pressure system bringing some pleasant sunny weather to Newton. Just in case, the rain date is two weeks later on Sunday, Oct. 3. If it looks doubtful, you can check the website or at the park for word on cancellation. Even the Patriots playing in Arizona have scheduled a late afternoon start in deference to the Parkfest planning committee.

Notices have been in the Newton Tab the last two weeks and signs have been posted around the area. There may have even been some notice on NewTV (Newton cable television). Thanks to the many volunteers who hand delivered flyers to most of the residences near Wellington Park. We would much appreciate it if, after the Parkfest, you could help take down any of our green flyers that you see posted. We go around after to take them down but the more you take down the less our volunteers will. In the interest of community, it would be great if everyone would check in with any new residents in the area (to invite) or any elderly folks (to offer a ride). The Parkfest is a great way to meet new folks that live nearby.

We will have a welcome table where we will have name tags available. Please stop there when you arrive to make one up with your name and street. We hope that people will make a lot of new connections at the Parkfest. At the welcome table you will also find a sign up sheet for the email Wellington Park News. We will have information on our upcoming CPA proposal and a wish list of park improvements for your perusal. The engineering plan for the new courts will be posted (thanks to Lowell Haynes of the Planning Department for providing the plan).

The Parkfest is a totally free event. However if you feel that you would like to contribute to the Parkfest or to our fund for park improvements you can make a tax deductible contribution to the Wellington Park Fund which is maintained by our non-profit sponsor – Newton Community Service Centers. There will be a donation box at the Parkfest or you could send a check to “The Wellington Park Fund c/o NCSC, 492 Waltham Street, West Newton, MA 02465. Checks may be made payable to NCSC / Wellington Park Fund.

Our wonderful food committee (Lorraine Miller, Susan Boyer and Jennifer Tchejeyan) have been planning and getting our food together. The menu will be all-beef hot dogs, tofu dogs, buns, ketchup, mustard, soda, water, and other beverages. Ice cream treats will also be available later in the afternoon. Newton Parks have a no-alcohol policy. If you brought anything, it should be simple and preferably nothing that could spoil. Things like cookies, chips, etc would be preferred to minimize anyone being put at risk. It would also be good to avoid any nut related items (or if brought clearly labeled). Bob Mobilia will once again be our grillmaster and we will have provision for our vegetarian friends.

Due to our outreach to the entire Newton Community (in publicity) we have come under the purview of the Newton Health Department and have obtained a special permit for food. In doing so, we must abide by more stringent regulations for food handling than would normally be expected at a block party. We have also obtained a permit from the fire department for our use of propane grills. Thanks to the folks at Park and Rec for the overall permit for use of the park. As part of the Neighborly Newton program, we expect that the Mayor will pay a visit later in the afternoon – sometime between 3 and 4 pm (possibly in some unusual vehicle). There is a political event at the nearby Swedish home at 1:30 and there is always a chance that some of our elected officials may come after that event.

Thanks to our volunteers we may have a full slate of kid oriented activities. There may be games, a scavenger hunt, sidewalk chalk drawing, facepainting, balloons, the ever popular bike tune-ups, a bubble machine, water balloons, balloon animals, jump rope, tattoos (temporary of course!) and even a moon bounce! The scavenger hunt will start at 2 pm.

For the first time, we will have some great musical entertainment at the Wellington Parkfest. We have engaged Danny Williams (a local piano teacher – Middle C Music) who is the lead singer and keyboardist fro the Felix Brown Band, and two of his musician friends, Darren Simon on drums and Aaron Bellamy on bass. So be prepared for some pleasant sounds on Sunday.

For those who don’t know, Wellington Park is near the corner of Kilburn Road and Henshaw Street (one block northeast of Cherry and River Streets). Anyone who would like to help can contact Michelle Roover at (617-796-0142) or email wellingtonpark@aol.com. If you would like to help on the day of the event just come early (to set up) or stay late (to clean up). We could use extra coolers for drinks and things, ice, folding tables or card tables, and folding chairs. We have limited seating at the park, so if you can bring a chair or two – it would be great.

Wellington Park Improvements

We intend to put in a CPA proposal (due Oct. 15) for funds to be able to complete the court restoration at Wellington Park. We are soliciting ideas for any additional improvement ideas that you may have for Wellington Park. These might include additional play equipment, additional pathways and benches, signage, new water fountain, garden hose connection, or whatever. Let us know what ideas you have to make Wellington Park a better place. We will have a meeting soon to discuss and plan what to put in our CPA proposal. In the meantime send your ideas to wellingtonpark@aol.com.
